Three micro and 25 nano satellites from six countries namely Canada, Finland, France, Republic of Korea, UK and U.S., make up the other payload.

The Indian Space Research Organisation's (ISRO's) today gave what it called a "new year's gift to India": The launch of its 100th satellite on board on a Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) rocket.

Following the successful launch of today's PSLV-C40, ISRO officials congratulated the team to have executed the mission in a short span of time even after failure.

# PSLV C-40 rocket launches Cartosat-2, 30 other satellites in single mission from Sriharikota. The opening mission of 2018 was considered crucial for ISRO as the previous PSLV launch came as a setback to scientists as the backup navigation satellite IRNSS-1H could not be placed in orbit following a snag in the final leg of the PSLV-C39 mission in August past year.

1983: Known as INSAT, ISRO launches nine satellite for communication and broadcast purposes.

India's space program has a budget of around $4 billion and Modi's government hopes the latest launches will improve its prospects of winning a larger share of the more than $300 billion global space industry.

He said the previous launch faced a heat shield problem and an ISRO committee has addressed it and taken steps to ensure the vehicle was "robust". The launch is expected to take two hours and 21 seconds. "We have some exciting launches coming up including Chandrayaan 2, GSLV MKIII and GSLV MKII" said Isro chairman-designate K Sivan.

It was launched from the first launch pad of the Satish Dhawan Space Centre at Sriharikota, about 100 kms from Chennai.

The total weight of all the 31 satellites carried onboard is about 1,323 kg (1.45 tons).

"The propellant filling operation of fourth stage of PSLV-C40 is under progress", said an update on ISRO's website on Thursday morning. Cartosat-2 series was the first to be separated from the rocket and injected into the sun synchronous orbit at 505km above the earth, followed by the 10 kg nano satellite and the 100 kg micro-sat in different orbits.

It will mark the PSLV's return-to-flight after a four-month grounding in the wake of a failure in August.
