Idris apologises for referring to Benue killings as communual clashes

President Buhari meets Governor Ortom of Benue State

"The law seeks to protect all and as I talk to you, except this Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore, who are instigating people to fight and to kill us, there are Fulani men in Benue State as I talk to you doing their business".

The corpses arrived the capital city at exactly 12 noon.

Gov. Samuel Ortom announced government's decision to hold a mass burial for the deceased at a stakeholders meeting in Makurdi on Wednesday.

Similarly, the Rights group has carpeted Federal government functionaries for contemplating the deployment of public resources to promote private businesses of cattle rearing by establishing the illegal cattle colonies in parts of Nigeria.

"You beat the iron while it's still hot, that's the blacksmith principle", said David Ogbole, a Pentecostal preacher in Makurdi who leads a civic coalition against herdsmen activities in Benue State. Police spokesman Moses Joel Yamu said in a statement that herdsmen were suspected in the slayings.

In compliance with the order, Idris is moving into the troubled state with additional five units of Police Mobile Force (PMF). President Muhammadu Buhari, himself a Fulani, a tribe known for nomadic animal rearing, faces accusations that he has not been tough on the menace of his kinsmen - a claim the presidency has vehemently denied.

"And it is the practice in other parts of the world - on African soil in Swaziland, South Africa, Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique, nearly all African countries that rear cattle; they ranch, so why can't we do the same thing here".

He said, "I never said I was not allowed to speak with Mr President".

Earlier, speaker after speaker had criticised the IGP for describing the herdsmen attacks on Benue communities as mere communal clashes, insisting that it was nothing short of genocide and ethnic cleansing.

"A group declared as the fourth deadliest terrorist group in the world as far back as 2015 can not be handled with levity by the Federal Government as being done presently and the earlier President Buhari is made to realise that his main duty is to protect the lives of all Nigerians, the better".

The police boss said the meeting was geared towards finding lasting solution to the crisis that bedevilled some communities of the state.

"We are conducting investigation into the killings and will take appropriate action against perpetrators of the heinous crime".

Asked if the police had made new arrest since the January 2 arrest of eight suspects, Mr. Makama said efforts had since shifted to helping those sacked from their villages return.

Taxpayers should see tax cuts in February paychecks, Treasury secretary says
In the meantime, employers and payroll service providers should continue to use the existing 2017 withholding tables and systems. The government is requiring employers to begin using the new guidelines as soon as possible, but "no later than February 15".
