The professors are also highly critical of the now-abandoned plan to construct an above-ground parking garage that was meant to utilize parts of Midway Plaisance, protesting that although "public lands are being given away, all the profits from this parking lot will go to the Obama Foundation".

In its letter, the group expressed concerns the center won't be a "bold vision for urban living", but instead will become "an object-lesson in the mistakes of the past".

Located in Jackson Park on the South Side of Chicago, the Obama Presidential Center will now comprise of a 235-foot-high tower (160-180-feet in previous plans) as the main building, housing a museum telling the story of Obama as well as that of civil rights and African American history.

The majority of the campus, Obama says, will be open to the public.

However, the women had to sit in a "family section" of the stadium so that they would be separated from the male spectators. The Saudi government said last week women would be allowed to attend a second match on Saturday and a third next Thursday.

"First, there are concerns that the Obama Center as now planned will not provide the promised development or economic benefits to the neighborhood", the letter explains. The Obama Foundation announced Monday afternoon it no longer plans to do this. "Overall, this is a socially regressive plan".

Photos of the proposed architecture for the new Obama Presidential Center have been released. A two-level athletic center includes basketball courts (for playing the president's favorite sport) alongside workout rooms and multipurpose space. New plans call for an underground parking garage at the Obama Center site. "We want to create an economic engine for the South Side of Chicago", Obama said in a video address. And while community members have anxious that the Obama Presidential Center will take up space in a way that inexorably alters the historic place's character, the new plans assert that the closure of nearby Cornell Drive will create a net gain in total park acreage.

The Obama Foundation said in a statement that despite the criticism the organization has received about the project, the foundation appreciates the feedback and looks forward to working with the community to gain their support for the center.
