The Associated Press reported that Russian TV stations and reporters were present as cameras caught Putin dunking and crossing himself in Lake Seliger in the northwestern region of Russia.

Putin then crossed himself and briefly submerged his entire body under the water to commemorate the baptism of Jesus Christ, as the Russian Orthodox Church does each year on January 19. Believers throughout Russian Federation immerse themselves into holes cut into frozen rivers and lakes that have been blessed by a priest.

Russian President Vladimir Putin submerged himself in freezing water in celebration of Epiphany, a holiday in Orthodox Christianity that celebrates Jesus' baptism. The president has reportedly bathed in icy waters on Epiphany before, but this is the first time he's done it in public.

Authorities set up bathing sites for believers all over Russian Federation, including some areas in Siberia where temperatures dipped below -30 C (-22 F).

Putin has garnered wide attention for photos and video footage of him shirtless on horseback, shirtless fishing, shirtless hunting and now, shirtless worshipping.

Another famous image shows him fishing bare chested with high-waisted green pants.
