MMA: How Francis Ngannou went from homeless on the streets of Paris to the hottest heavyweight prospect in the UFC

Stipe Miocic lands a right hand against Francis Ngannou during a heavyweight championship mixed martial arts bout at UFC 220.

Leave it up to top contender Derrick Lewis to troll title contender Francis Ngannou following his decision loss to UFC heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic in the main event of UFC 220 on Saturday night at TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts on pay-per-view.

Miocic stayed in absolute control throughout the fight with Ngannou basically in survival mode as he looked content to make it to the final horn but there was no doubt when 25 minutes was up that the championship was going back home to Cleveland.

For a round, the fight seemed like it could reach epic slugfest proportions.

Miocic and Ngannou tagged each other several times in the first round and both fighters were staggered and in trouble. But the fight got worse from there.

"He's a tough dude". Miocic took Ngannou's back with seconds remaining in the round and locked in the rear naked choke but the buzzer saved him.

The fight never really picked up from there.

In the third, a mouth-open, arms-down Ngannou nevertheless nailed Miocic with a shot only for the champ to successfully shoot for another takedown.

"I think I underestimated (him) a little bit", said Ngannou, whose rise from homeless to heavyweight contender captivated a sport eager for a new star.

Miocic was looking defend his heavyweight title for a record third consecutive time after running through former champions Alistair Overeem and Junior dos Santos in his two previous fights.

BOSTON - If Francis Ngannou is the future of the UFC's heavyweight division, the future will have to wait. After momentarily threatening with a guillotine, Miocic released and Ngannou as the two fighters made their way back to their feet.

"Listen, that's why I have the best coaches in the world, the best teammates in the world", Miocic said. Oezdemir came out swinging and was able to avoid Cormier's grappling early. With 10-seconds left in the fight, Miocic clinched back up against the fence and held Ngannou at bay until the nd of the fight.

"I proved that I am worthy of being called champion". He was beaten twice by Jones, though the second of those was changed to a no-contest when Jones failed his post-fight drug test in July after UFC 214.

"I can knock him out, I can submit him, I can beat him by decision", Cormier said.

At one stage, the champion was backed against the cage and Oezdemir connected with a left hand that resembled the same knockout blows that had ended fights in the past. Oezdemir back on the offensive again.

Abdul Razak Alhassan caught Sabah Homasi flush with a right uppercut in the first round for one of the more spectacular knockouts in recent UFC history to win a welterweight bout. That event was headlined by a lightweight title fight between Frankie Edgar and B.J. Penn.
