Born in the South African town of Witbank in 1939, Masekela was inspired to learn the trumpet after seeing Kirk Douglas play Bix Beiderbecke in the 1950 film "Young Man with a Horn". Masekela was also responsible for the record, Bring Him Back Home which was considered one of the unofficial anthems of the anti-apartheid movement.

Here are five facts you should know about the icon. The school, near the border of South Africa, shuttered in 1985 after defense forces from the apartheid regime conducted a raid in the area, killing 15 people.

Masekela received a Grammy nomination for best world music album with his 2012 record "Jabulani" and appeared at a White House jazz gala in 2016. He also had a number 1 United States pop hit in 1968 with his version of "Grazing in the Grass".

"My biggest obsession is to show Africans and the world who the people of Africa really are", Hugh Masekela is quoted as saying on his official website. With the help of Trevor Huddleston and other friends, he was admitted into London's Guildhall School of Music and later moved to the United States where he studied classical trumpet at the Manhattan School of Music in NY.

"Soweto Blues" was sung by internationally celebrated late musician Miriam Makeba, also known as Mama Africa.

Masekela performed on recordings by the Byrds, made an album in 1978 with trumpeter and bandleader Herb Alpert, and later collaborated with Paul Simon.

Masekela returned to South Africa in 1990 after Mandela was freed and the ban on the African National Congress party was lifted.

Ken Addy did not only follow Hugh Masekela's musical exploits.

In June 2010, he performed at both the opening concert of the Fifa World Cup and the tournament's opening ceremony in Soweto's Soccer City with Femi Kuti.

Known as the father of South African jazz, the trumpet master channeled the struggle against apartheid into soulful compositions that championed the experiences of ordinary South Africans.

"His music was not only a powerful tool to heighten the levels of political consciousness among the oppressed black majority, but served as a instrument to mobilize the masses ... to agitate for an alternative South Africa", Mkhize said.

"Even in recent years, "Bra Hugh" continued to fly the flag for South Africa in global festivals, and his home country including the performance at the Grammy Awards in 2013", Minister Mthethwa said.

Masekela have over 50 albums.

He has received many honours including the Doctor of Music (honoris causa) from the Rhodes University in 2015 and an Honorary Doctorate in Music from the University of York in 2014.
