Meryl Streep to Star in 'Big Little Lies' Season 2 for HBO

HBO's Big Little Lies is upping its star power for season two. Oscar-winning actress Meryl Streep is joining Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, and Shailene Woodley in the drama series, marking the first time she's returned to a major television show since winning an Emmy in the early 2000s for her work in Angels in America.

So, if there's any TV show you SHOULD be watching this year, it's clearly Big Little Lies. Streep's character is "concerned for the well-being of her grandchildren" in the wake of Perry's death, and she rolls into town looking for the truth about what happened to him.

Also intriguing for industry watchers, Variety reports that Streep will be paid around $800,000 per every episode she appears in.

Streep was this week nominated for an Oscar for her role in The Post.

In a very rare TV role for the actress, the three-time Oscar victor has signed on to play the character Mary Louise Wright - the mother-in-law of Nicole Kidman's character Celeste Wright and mother of Alexander Skarsgard's Perry Wright. Streep is of course coming off a fresh Oscar nomination for The Post-her 21st nomination from the Academy of Motion Picture Art and Sciences-and she'll likely be making room on the shelf for another Emmy nod too in Big Little Lies. Season 1 was based on the novel of the same name by Liane Moriarty, with Season 2 based partially on a new story by the author. American Honey's Andrea Arnold will direct, taking over from season one's director Jean-Marc Vallée. HBO announced the series would receive another installment on December 8, 2017. Big Little Lies is already an awards magnet, its freshman season dominating the TV categories at the recent Golden Globes and also winning eight Emmys last fall. But to talk about who she'll be playing, we'll need to spoil the terrific ending of the first season.
