Trump Understands Intelligence Briefings Like A Veteran, CIA Director Mike Pompeo Says

In recent months North Korea has conducted several increasingly sophisticated nuclear tests as it expanded its missile programme

While Pompeo spoke at length about the threats posed by North Korea, Iran and Russian Federation, he also discussed the threat of being outmaneuvered by cybercriminals who don't have to navigate through the same hierarchy that the US intelligence community does.

The US is anxious that North Korea's expanding nuclear arsenal will trigger a global arms race, CIA Director Mike Pompeo has said.

During an interview with the American Enterprise Institute, a conservative think tank based in Washington, D.C., Pompeo told Marc A. Thiessen, "I have seen 25-year intelligence professional receive briefings".

"I said the same thing several months before that", he said and added: "I want everybody to understand that we are working diligently to make sure that a year from now I can still tell you they are several months away from having that capacity".

The Trump administration in September submitted a proposal to the United Nations Security Council requesting authorization for the U.S. Navy and Air Force to interdict and inspect North Korean ships in global waters.

He said that North Korea was "a handful of months" from the ability to "hold America at risk" and he said the Central Intelligence Agency was focused on ensuring that "a year from now they are still several months away".

"Our mission is to make the day that he can do that as far off as possible".

CIA Director Mike Pompeo warned on Tuesday that North Korea is intent on developing a reliable arsenal of nuclear weapons to threaten America, not just "a showpiece" to preserve Kim Jong Un's regime. The goal of Kim's nuclear and conventional weapons development, he added, extends beyond regime preservation to securing a North Korean-ruled, unified peninsula. The sanctions have been imposed on six North Korean vessels, North Korea's Ministry of Crude Oil Industry, two China-based companies and individuals in Russian Federation and Abkhazia. He said the Trump administration is "laser-focused" on achieving a diplomatic solution to the nuclear standoff.

"He has the grounding for him to be able to grasp this information in a way that he can ask sophisticated questions that then lead to important policy discussions", Pompeo said.

"If I had an experience set or if it needed full input from all of the intelligence community or the broader USA government ... then I keep that decision", he said.

Pompeo was careful not to assign blame to the agency he now leads and acknowledged that obtaining accurate and reliable information from inside North Korea has been hard for many years.

"We're working to prepare a series of options to make sure that we can deliver a range of things so the president will have the full suite of possibilities". "This administration is deeply aware that we need to continue to push back against the Russians everywhere we find them".

"We saw what happened in Hawaii".
