Solar Energy World Reacts to Solar Tariffs

In a signing ceremony in the Oval Office, the President officially accepted a recommendation from the U.S. International Trade Commission, which investigated specific trade complaints about imported washing machines and solar panels, and recommended higher tariffs for four years.

The two solar companies that had sought the tariffs, Suniva and SolarWorld Americas, argue that low-priced imports have decimated USA manufacturing of solar cells and modules in recent years.

Most of the rest of the solar industry, including installers and companies that make related technology, oppose the tariffs, saying they would threaten tens of thousands of jobs.

Chinese industry sources have said that there will be a severe impact, more on the U.S. consumers and industry as compared to China if the United States continues with its move to impose extra tariffs on the solar panels imported from China.

"We think this is not the right move for the U.S. economy, not the right move for U.S. energy security, and not even the right move for U.S. manufacturing", Ms. Hopper said on a conference call on Tuesday.

The tax is also seen as another jab at Asian trade rivals by the Trump administration in an attempt to further bolster American businesses.

The US measures, which include setting up tariffs of up to 50% for imported washing machines, were "unfair", Kim said at a meeting of industry representatives.

The new tariff falls to 25 percent after a year, and then 20 percent and 15 percent each year after, before phasing out entirely.

Oil Prices Cool As API Reports Surprise Crude Inventory Build (USO)
Gasoline inventories rose by 3.1 million barrels and stocks of distillate fuels, which include diesel, were up by 639,000 barrels. This rising supply, along with higher prices, risks OPEC members cheating on their deal, analysts said.

While the action is targeted at imports from China, Trump's tariffs apply to all imports, since Chinese manufacturers have moved operations to other countries.

"We are selling energy that can be created by wind, by natural gas, by hydro, by coal, by nukes". The Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) predicted the loss of approximately 23,000 jobs within the sector due to the imposed tariffs in a press release. Analysts say the impact ranges from a 10-per-cent tax at the high end for utility-scale projects, down to 3 per cent for rooftop installations that can charge a higher price-per-watt. "They need our products that are cheaper and better", he said.

It also said that the USA washing machine manufacturing industry itself had stated that damage it had suffered due to imports was not related to Mexican-made products.

Other U.S. solar stocks were mixed, with SunPower Corp, which manufactures panels in Asia, down more than 6 percent and residential installer SunRun Inc. up about 6 percent.

Solar power, the president said, is a "potentially great industry" that could create "a lot of jobs".

'Modest' price increase for some washing machines?

Tesla had been part of a group of domestic manufacturers that lobbied against tariffs on solar products.

"Ironically, the very jobs we all want to grow, American manufacturing jobs, will retract as the number of projects are scaled back significantly", Hopper wrote in the letter sent on January 17".
