The celestial coincidence hasn't happened in more than 150 years. The red and orange wavelengths are bent toward the moon while other colours scatter away from the moon.

While the January 31 lunar eclipse will be tough to see from some parts of the United States, there are other spectacular heavenly displays in store for Americans in the future.

But what will really make the January 31 moon spectacular for some viewers is the fact that it will be happening during a total lunar eclipse. But twice in each lunar cycle, the moon does cross into our planet's orbital plane.

A supermoon is when the moon comes closest to the earth in its orbit.

Finally it'll also be a blood moon, which is a total eclipse that, with dimmed light passing through the Earth's atmosphere, gives the moon a red hue. To see the upcoming eclipse, if you are west of the Pacific, you will need to rise before dawn, and East of the Pacific, you can watch the eclipsed moon rise into the late night and early morning after sunset.

While it's also safe to assume the lunar eclipse will not draw the huge crowds of this summer's solar eclipse, B.C. residents are in a prime position to witness it, Boyle says. The next one visible in North America will be on January 21, 2019. Rather, it's lit by light filtered through the Earth's atmosphere, via the same spectral filtering - a mechanism known as Rayleigh scattering - that causes red sunsets and sunrises.

Vince McMahon announces new XFL football league
The regular season will be 10 weeks long with the playoffs consisting of two semifinal games and a championship game. Any person with a criminal record, including a DUI, will not be allowed to join the XFL , according to McMahon.

The lunar eclipse will be visible in the Rocky Mountain region beginning around 4:48 a.m. MT.

"Blood moon" is a phrase used to describe the reddish color the moon takes on during the totality phase of the eclipse.

I have never heard a definitive explanation as to how they came to be called Blue Moons.

While the December 3rd moon was the only supermoon of 2017, it was the first in a trilogy of supermoons in quick succession. While that is mostly true, sometimes we get two in one month, something that is referred to as a "blue moon". And each month's full moon has a name. As the second full moon of the month, it earns the title of a blue moon as well. But this is not your typical full moon.

The second definition of a blue moon states it's the third moon in a season in which there are four moons, which happens about every 2.7 years. When this happens, as it will on January 31, the event is commonly referred to as a "blue" moon.

Finally, to add the cherry on top, this will also be a supermoon. The average distance between the earth and moon is around 239,000 miles. As Donald W. Olson, Richard Tresch Fienberg, and Roger Sinnott write for Sky and Telescope, the blue moon disagreement can be traced back to 1946, when James Hugh Pruett wrote an article for Sky and Telescope called "Once in a Blue Moon". By 7:31 a.m., the moon will have set under the horizon and will no longer be visible.
