Man convicted in road rage fatal shooting of ex-NFL player Joe McKnight

A jury in Gretna (La.) found Ronald Gasser guilty of manslaughter in the shooting death of former National Football League running back Joe McKnight, multiple outlets reported.

Closing arguments wrapped up Friday morning in the second-degree murder trial of Ronald Gasser.

He was arrested on a manslaughter charge December 5, 2016, a few days after shooting, and charged with killing McKnight at a busy intersection in Terrytown following a road rage incident.

Defense attorneys claimed Gasser feared for his life when he opened fire from his driver's seat at McKnight, who was standing at his open passenger-side window.

Gasser said McKnight cut him off on the bridge. He could face upto 40 years in prison.

McKnight played running back for the Kansas City Chiefs in 2014. State District Judge Ellen Kovach set a March 15 sentencing date. However, the prosecutors quickly shot down the allegations by proving that they didn't find any gun powder on Mcknight which would be visible if the victim was in close contact with the shooter. Defense attorney Goetz said he planned to file for an appeal, reports said.

Shute acknowledged that McKnight had a hand on the open, passenger side window of Gasser's auto before he was shot.

Gasser was found guilty of manslaughter, not the initial charge of second-degree murder, which carries a mandatory life sentence.

Jurors began deliberations Friday afternoon in the case.

Gasser shot McKnight after what prosecutors said was a road rage incident that included aggressive driving along a five mile route.

Authorities said both Gasser and McKnight drove erratically before a confrontation at a traffic stop in Terrytown.

McKnight was considered the No. 1 running back recruit in the country when he came out of John Curtis Christian School in Louisiana in 2006. He played three years of college ball at USC, amassing 2,213 yards and 13 touchdowns on the ground.
