Gunmen attack Kabul military academy officials

Islamic State says it was behind the attack near the Marshal Fahim academy, which is the latest in a wave of violence carried out by insurgents, including the Taliban, in which scores of people have died.

An unknown number of militants mounted an attack on the Marshal Fahim National Defence University which lasted for almost an hour. Security forces have cordoned off the area.

Five soldiers were killed and 10 wounded, officials said.

According to the official, two attackers were killed and a third was detained. In October, a suicide attacker rammed a auto full of explosives into a bus carrying cadets from the academy, known as the Defence University, killing 15 of them.

In October a Taliban suicide bomber killed 15 Afghan army trainees as they travelled home from the Marshal Fahim academy.

Sharp rise in numbers of rough sleepers in England
The report is, as a result, only an indication of the actual numbers of people sleeping rough each year. The north west recorded a 38% rise in the number of rough sleepers, the greatest increase of any region.

The gunmen did not enter the heavily fortified compound on the western outskirts of the city, an Afghan security source said.

A local witness reports that the blasts were first heard at about 5 am and continued for at least an hour.

Hashmat Faqeri, a resident near the site, said he heard sounds of explosions and a gun battle.

The firefight near the military academy follows an attack on Saturday near a police checkpoint in Kabul that killed more than 100 people and wounded at least 235 others. The Taliban claimed the responsibility for both the attacks.

Masoom Stanekzai, the head of Afghanistan's intelligence service, said five suspects have been arrested for their involvement in the attack on the Intercontinental Hotel and that another had fled the country.
