National 5G Network: FCC Chairman Ajit Pai Opposes Trump Admin Proposal

"I oppose any proposal for the federal government to build and operate a nationwide 5G network", said Pai in a statement. U.S. officials believe that China could be a threat to both the country's economic and cyber security. The source said the internal White House debate will be over whether the United States government owns and builds the network or whether the carriers bind together in a consortium to build the network, an idea that would require them to put aside their business models to serve the country's greater good.

5G Nationalization ProposalAccording to reports published by media outlet Axios, the 5G nationalization proposal advocates nationalization as a means of countering threats posed by China's dominant position in the manufacture and operation of wireless network infrastructure, as well as the One Belt, One Road Initiative, which aims to enhance China's influence in other countries.

The official confirmed a recent report that suggested the option was now being debated by the administration though it could be six to eight months before the president decides to implement it.

Asked for comment, White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders confirmed that the administration had "discussed the need for a secure network".

The memo noted that the proposal to nationalize a 5G network only covers one part of the airwaves; there'd be other spaces where private companies could build.

The report claimed that now there is some debate over whether the government pays for and owns the network, or whether carriers will be asked to form a consortium and build the network.

In addition, the potential $275 billion cost of building a national 5G network might get some major pushback from fiscally conservative Republicans in Congress. In the first scenario, the government would rent access to carriers like AT&T and Verizon, Axios reported.

Trump has a tough audience to deal with in Davos: Dobbs
Trump comes to the globally minded conference days after signing new tariffs to boost American manufacturers. Trump will be the first US president to attend the Davos forum since Bill Clinton in 2000.

During 2012, ZTE Corp. and Huawei were subjects of an investigation by USA regulators into whether the equipment they made provided an opportunity for espionage by a foreign state and threatened critical infrastructure in the U.S.

Chinese telecommunications equipment makers Huawei and ZTE Corp have already been shut out of the lucrative carrier network market in the U.S. because of security worries.

"This has been building for months".

FCC Commissioner Jessica Rosenworcel, a Democrat, said the memo "correctly diagnoses a real problem".

More of these eyesores to go up everywhere? The justification resonates with a fear of Chinese intrusions into the 5G network as well as concern that Chinese protocols and standards might not benefit American enterprise. "But the remedy proposed here really misses the mark".

The New Generation Artificial Intelligence Development Plan fits with Washington's view that AI is key for global economic domination and national security.

"U.S. commercial wireless companies are the envy of the world and are already rushing ahead to lead in 5G", he said in a statement, adding that the FCC should provide additional spectrum to help facilitate deployment.
