Raila Odinga taking the oath in Nairobi

Kenyan authorities shut down TV stations to prevent live coverage of a swearing-in event by opposition leader Raila Odinga, who boycotted last year's disputed presidential election.

"I, Raila Omolo Odinga, do swear that I will protect the nation as people's president, so help me God", he said amid deafening cheers from his supporters.

Kenya's government had warned that Tuesday's mock inauguration of Odinga as "the people's president" after months of election turmoil would be considered treason.

Mr. Wachira however said the authorities had not communicated on why they had taken the action against the RMS.

"Why should we elevate cowards to the highest office in the land when our heroes Raila Odinga and [Mombasa governor] Hassan Joho are still alive?" he posed in a phone conversation with The Star on Tuesday.

He said after his police security was withdrawn he felt vulnerable and hired a private security firm.

Afterward, the biography on Odinga's verified Twitter account had been updated to read: "This is the official account of His Excellency Raila Amolo Odinga, President of the Republic of Kenya".

The U.S. has advised Odinga against the so-called inauguration, as Kenya, East Africa's economic hub, tries to move beyond months of deadly election turmoil.

Police officers and personnel from Kenya's communications authority disconnected equipment as broadcasters Citizen TV, KTN and NTV filmed people sitting peacefully on the grass. But the Supreme Court annulled the results, saying there were voting irregularities and signs of fraud.

A series of clashes occurred through the tense election period, with almost 100 killed, according to the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights.

The oath was administered by Ruaraka MP TJ Kajwang and former Nairobi governor candidate Miguna Miguna. It is not clear what Raila will do since Kenya has president Uhuru Kenyatta and deputy president William Ruto.

After boycotting October's election rerun, Odinga has continued to contest the president's legitimacy, culminating in today's ceremony.

Kenyatta won with 98 percent.

The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) in a statement called for "credible and expeditious investigations into any form of illegal switch off". Odinga has strong support there and in the west and along the coast, areas where people have long felt ignored by central government and shut out of political patronage networks.
