BBC outlines solution to unequal pay

BBC Director General Tony Hall is to appear before a committee over the pay issue

The BBC has published a report into pay equality and proposed a new framework for determining the pay of on-air presenters, correspondents and talent. It found the gender pay gap at the BBC was 9.3%, against a national average of 18.1%. "I raised the equal pay issue many times over the years, but nothing was done".

Last year, a list of 96 BBC stars earning £150,000 a year or more was released, with just 34 women, compared to 62 men.

Tony Hall, director-general of the BBC, said: "The BBC believes in equality".

"The BBC believes in equality".

"It is clear that the BBC still has a big problem in terms of gender pay", Collins said.

Some presenters told the committee that they were offered rises shortly before the BBC published its list of high earners.

"We want to help women progress in their career and have set out ambitious targets to close the gender pay gap, as well as for half of roles on air and in senior management to be filled by women. The plans we're setting out today go further and are more important steps in modernising the BBC and making it fairer".

Facebook will push local stories in news feed
Facebook will start by looking at US -based publishers but says it intends to expand the effort into other countries. It is not just local news services like Nextdoor that will benefit from the changes , Facebook executives say.

A BBC spokeswoman said: "We look forward to an informed debate at the select committee based on all the facts". That means the likes of Gary Lineker and Chris Evans, who are at the top of the pay scale, were not included. "The only mention of equal pay in the letter of engagement with PwC refers to an "assessment of equal pay risks". There is also a lack of clarity over pay decisions, and there has been a slower rate of pay progression, for both men and women, over the past decade because of a period of significant pay restraint.

Late last week, it emerged that six well-known male presenters at the BBC have agreed to take pay cuts following a growing controversy over the gender pay gap at the broadcaster. Showing to the satisfaction of a tribunal judge that a man is paid more than a woman because - and only because - of their gender is invariably hard.

She claimed she left the BBC after almost 15 years because she was being paid around £10,000 less than male colleagues in similar roles.

Most of the BBC's women employees have stopped short of pillorying their employer publicly but they would be fully entitled to do so given the corporation's response to their quite reasonable demands for equal pay.

"In which case there is not an equal pay claim under the law".

Following the publication of the pay of talent earning more than £150,000 past year, the BBC has been involved in controversy over the discrepancy of pay among employees, with Carrie Gracie resigning from her role as China editor in protest at inequalities. The group has accused public chain managers of hiding widespread gender discrimination that exists in broadcaster and has sent ir grievances to British parliament's media committee, which investigates wage gap in main news network of United United, and that will examine matter this Wednesday.

The BBC has promised to remedy the problem, with a thoroughgoing review which was unveiled on Tuesday.
