CDC Director Brenda Fitzgerald resigns

Dr. Brenda Fitzgerald resigned from her position as director of the Centers for Disease Control on Wednesday Jan. 31 after reports that her financial interests conflicted with the mission of the CDC

The director of the Centers for Disease Control has resigned due to numerous conflicts of interest that prevented her from doing her job effectively, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Fitzgerald's resignation was accepted Wednesday morning by current HHS Secretary Alex Azur who assumed that role just last week.

Fitzgerald became director of the CDC in July, bought stock in Japan Tobacco in August 2017, and sold it at the end of October.

Such an investment is obviously at odds with the mission of the CDC, considering cigarette smoking will result in the deaths of almost half a million Americans this year. "The Secretary thanks Dr. Brenda Fitzgerald for her service and wishes her the best in all her endeavors".

"Inexplicably, she decided to make matters even worse", he said, referring to the reported tobacco stock purchases.

The CDC is an agency tasked with promoting public health, and part of its mission includes curbing smoking, which make Fitzgerald's purchase of tobacco stock both glaring and controversial.

US Diplomat Resigns From Suu Kyi Panel On Rakhine Crisis
In a statement Friday, Suu Kyi's office said she sacked Richardson, accusing him of attempting to "pursue his own agenda". Duterte again launched another tirade against human rights groups who criticize his war on drugs.

In an interview with the Wall Street Journal published on Wednesday, Fitzgerald was quoted saying that she resigned because she felt the investment issue was becoming a distraction for the agency.

Fitzgerald also invested in pharmaceutical companies Merck and Bayer, as well as health insurance company Humana, according to Politico.

Fitzgerald did not sell her shares of the tobacco stock until October 26, months after her visit. Fitzgerald also reportedly purchased stocks ranging from $15,001 to $50,000 in U.S. Food Holding Corporation, a food distributor for restaurant and other institutions connected to the industries like healthcare, hospitality, education and more.

Fitzgerald sold her shares of tobacco stock on October 26, and all of her stock holdings worth more than $1,000 by November 21, according to the article.

Fitzgerald is the second top-shelf health official to leave the Trump administration in the past four months.

"If the president and other senior White House officials do not see the need to divest themselves of their business interests, why should the director of the CDC?" She could not divest in a timely manner, he said. She replaced HHS Secretary Dr. Tom Price in July when he resigned following a scandal regarding the use of his private planes.
