SGMC observes Heart Health Month

According to the American Heart Association, cardiovascular disease, listed as the underlying cause of death, accounts for almost 800,000 deaths in the United States, and that translates to about one in every three.

The American Heart Association has invited several national and local iconic landmarks to turn their facades red on Friday, Feb. 2, in support of the American Heart Association's National Wear Red Day to elevate awareness of heart disease. Women should know their cholesterol, blood pressure and sugar levels. So you're probably never going to get heart disease, right? It's an effort to increase women's awareness of their risk of heart disease. The hats were knit by volunteers as part of the Go Red For Women Campaign.

Help the American Heart Association in their campaign to raise awareness about heart disease in women.

Don't smoke, drink in moderation, and focus on getting exercise are some of the top three suggestions given by physicians for cutting down on the risk of developing a heart disease.

For more information about women's heart health, visit www.goredforwomen.org or www.nhlbi.nih.gov/health/educational/hearttruth/.

According to the survey results, 64 percent of women say pharmacists play a role in managing heart health, but few (15%) say they have asked their pharmacist questions about heart health or about the heart medications they are taking (36%). One woman will die every 80 seconds because of cardiovascular disease.

Just a reminder that Friday, Feb 2, is National Wear Red Day! Go Red For Women advocates for more research and swifter action for women's heart health. However, the disease can often be prevented when people make healthy choices and manage their health conditions.

Moser said it's "shocking" that SCAD heart attacks have only been recently discovered, but research focusing on women's health has long lagged far behind research on men's health.
