DC's groundhog makes his prediction on spring - 6 more weeks

Punxsutawney Phil Season Prediction Winter Shadow Pennsylvania

Punxsutawney Phil Season Prediction Winter Shadow Pennsylvania

We had a warm winter season in 2017, making it that Punxsutawney Phil's forecast of six more weeks of winter to be false.

If the groundhog doesn't see its shadow, spring is around the corner.

It seems we won't be treated to an early spring this year, instead having to put up with winter a little while longer.

What does that mean?

Groundhog Day was brought to the US by Pennsylvanian German settlers.

While enjoying an early spring might sound like a good idea for outdoor activities, it can wreak havoc on agriculture, in particular when it comes to tricking crops into blooming early. That's in spite of forecasts that predicted a cloudy, shadow-less morning.

That's his typical prediction: It's only happened more than 100 other times in the 132-year history of the tradition. "I see my royal shadow; six more weeks of winter to go". Mayor de Blasio famously dropped the Staten Island groundhog during the 2014 ceremony.

For the 131st year, Punxsutawney Phil made his famous prognostication and, once again, science disagrees.

If you ask Phil's handlers, called - no joke - the Inner Circle of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, the groundhog's predictions aren't geographically specific (they always come to pass somewhere).

Punxsutawney's newspaper editor exploited the holiday and began advertising the town's groundhog as the the official "Groundhog Day meteorologist". When said Germans immigrated to America, hedgehogs were less in abundance, so they switched to groundhogs.

Groundhog Day stems from the European holiday known as Candlemas, a Christian "festival of lights" in the bleak midwinter of February 2. Is it an early spring or just more snow.

Just after daybreak on February 2, men wearing top hats and suits pull Punxsutawny Phil from his burrow in front of a crowd of up to 40,000 people, who gather every year to see him predict the weather.

The event now attracts up to 30,000 visitors to Punxsutawney, Jefferson County, located about 80 miles northeast of Pittsburgh.

Earlier this week, the groundhog posted that he was "waking up from hibernation".
