Snap Earnings Post Higher Than Expected Revenue, User Growth

Snap is redesigning its app to make it easier to use

That narrative changed on Tuesday after Snap Inc. scored a massive beat on its quarterly earnings report, recapping revenue and user growth 2017. Snapchat had 187 million daily active users in the fourth quarter, up 18 percent from a year ago and ahead of the 184.3 million analysts estimated.

In 2017, the year it went public, Snap recorded a stock-based compensation expense of $2.6 billion, accounting for 77 percent of its net loss and more than three times the amount it generated in revenue. The fourth quarter was an "important quarter for Snap as investor confidence in the company's growth story has waned". In after hours, Snap shares rocketed up after user growth was also reported as an increase.

The silver lining in a hard 12-month period for Snap is that it continues to grow both users and revenue despite Facebook's ruthless attempts to demolish it. Facebook's copies have certainly hurt the company, but they have not killed it yet. That means Snap is trading right around the price that it sold for during its IPO of $17.

Wall Street is looking for revenue of $253 million, or a 52 percent jump over past year. The turnaround appears to be showing signs of life, he added, "although they have much wood to chop ahead and competitive headwinds abound with Instagram front and center".

In a letter to investors issued today, Spiegel lays out the case for Snap's eagerness and efficiency at responding to growing competition from Facebook and slowing growth internally.

Snap lost $350 million compared to $440 million last quarter as operating expenses grew to $261 million.

"Our business really came together towards the end of past year and I am very proud of our team for working hard to deliver these results", said founder and chief executive Evan Spiegel. The Company's flagship product, Snapchat, is a camera application that helps people to communicate through short videos and images known as a Snap. This is the first time Snap has beat market expectations since going public past year.
