French President Macron to address joint session of National Assembly

Corsican nationalists demand greater autonomy before Emmanuel Macron visit

Thousands of nationalists demonstrated Sunday ahead of Macron's visit, asking for more autonomy, equal status for the Corsican language and the release of Corsican prisoners held in mainland prisons.

Local elected leaders Gilles Simeoni and Jean-Guy Talamoni stayed away from a working lunch with the 40-year-old president, on the second and final day of his trip to the Mediterranean island of 330,000 people.

"Though Macron is now implementing a reform that will allow regions to adjust the general law to make it more applicable for their specific needs, Corsica would like to go even further by having a special provision added to the French constitution based on Article 74, which is dedicated to French overseas territories, the lawmaker explained".

Unlike many in the nearby Spanish region of Catalonia, the French island's leaders aren't seeking full independence - but some believe it's only a matter of time before they do.

Today's visit marks the twentieth anniversary of the assassination of Claude Érignac, France's top official on the island who was killed during a wave of violence orchestrated by the National Liberation Front of Corsica.

"In the French republic, there's an official language: French", Macron said.

Oil World Turns Upside Down as US Sells Oil in Middle East
The VanEck Vectors Oil Services ETF (NYSEAMERICAN: OIH) traded up about 0.1%, at $26.23 in a 52-week range of $21.70 to $33.74. IEA data shows that OECD stocks fell of 600,000 bpd in the last three quarters of 2017, the largest since 1984.

Macron also used his speech to lavish praise on the natural beauty of the island, saying it must be cherished and protected.

Macron pledged to bolster police and security for the 320,000 residents in the territory, which has long had problems with drugs and gang crime - including mafia involvement.

The new strategy paid dividends.

The trip could be an uncomfortable one for the young president, whose government ruled out any major concessions on Corsican autonomy after the island's nationalists won a regional election in December.

Paris is expected to report a public deficit equivalent to 2.9 percent of GDP in 2017, below the European Union limit of 3.0 percent for the first time in 10 years.
