Bayern Munich also paid their respect in a lengthy post, which began: "Exactly 60 years have passed since the Munich air disaster - the biggest tragedy in Manchester United's long history, but the memory of those lost lives on".

The interviewee said he had lost two jobs because of his commitment to following United, and had even put his wedding on hold to watch them play.

"The victims will never be forgotten, they will always be remembered and will be a part of United's history forever".

Around 2,000 fans gathered in Germany for a fan-organised ceremony attended by club ambassador Denis Irwin.

Gregg, the team's goalkeeper, escaped the crash with only minor injuries but returned to the wreckage to pull other survivors to safety, including teammates Dennis Violett and Charlton and his badly hurt manager Busby.

A silence was held at 3.04pm, which was the time of the disaster, and Lingard appeared to respond to a tweet about Federation Internationale de Football Association at 3.07pm.

India eye historic lead against injury-hit Proteas
Overall, the match turns out to be the biggest disaster for the South African Team and they all out in the score of 118 runs. Fifteen minutes earlier umpires had extended play to give India a chance of finishing the match before the interval.

There were also ceremonies in Munich and Belgrade to mark the anniversary of the tragedy, which happened when the plane carrying Matt Busby's youthful team back via Munich from Belgrade on February 6, 1958 crashed on its third take-off attempt in icy weather. "The passion, determination and courage shown by the club to carry on in those disgusting moments have left an indelible mark forever". Along with this, fans also received a commemorative book about the disaster and the players and staff who perished.

"We used to watch a lot of the videos of games, especially from their FA Youth Cup runs, so we could see footage of what these players were like when they were young".

For many, the 60th anniversary celebrations merely coincided with their annual pilgrimage to the site of the disaster to lay flags, flowers, banners and mementos with messages in remembrance of the Babes at the specially-named Manchesterplatz near the site of the crash.

"When I got there, all the players were crying".

Only 21 of the 44 on the aircraft survived, notably manager, and former Liverpool right-half, Matt Busby and Bobby Charlton, who would go on to win the World Cup with England in 1966.

"That was like the Holy Grail for the club", said Valentine. Busby, who begot his side of young stars their nickname, was seriously injured in the crash.
