Eurostar confirms April launch date for London-Amsterdam

Eurostar direct rail services between London and Amsterdam will begin on 4 April, the company has announced, in an eagerly awaited move expected to spark a price war with airlines.

The launch of the London to Amsterdam service marks a historic milestone in the expansion of worldwide high speed rail travel, revolutionising the connection between these important destinations. Passengers making the return trip will initially need to stop in Brussels for passport controls because Dutch stations aren't yet equipped to make those checks.

"The launch of our service to the Netherlands represents an exciting advance in cross-Channel travel and heralds a new era in global high speed rail", Eurostar Chief Executive Nicolas Petrovic said.

The launch of the new London-Amsterdam service, with two trains per day, will set a new travel-time record for the London-Brussels leg, Eurostar said.

The journey time of 3h41 (London-Amsterdam) and 3h01 (London-Rotterdam), as well as the potential of the line - more than 4 million passengers travelling by air each year between London and Amsterdam, make this opening a historic landmark for cross-Channel travel.

"This connecting return journey will be a temporary measure whilst the governments in the United Kingdom and the Netherlands complete an agreement which will enable passport checks to be conducted on departure in the Netherlands as in other key Eurostar destinations", the operator said.

The trains from London to the Netherlands will depart at 8.31am and 5.31pm on weekdays, then 8.31am Saturday and 5.31pm on Sunday. Eurostar expects this will be completed by late 2019. The company said that travel to Brussels will now be even faster with the new route too, only taking one hour and 48 minutes, instead of two hours and five minutes.
