One of those planes, a United States-made F-16, crashed on its return from that mission, landing in an empty field near near the northern Israeli village of Harduf, and one of the pilots was injured as they ejected, the Israeli military said.

Then an Israeli aircraft is shot down by forces backing the Assad regime. Separately, Iran issued a joint statement alongside the other main allies of the Syrian regime - Russian Federation and Lebanese militant group Hezbollah - denying the allegations regarding the drone. At approximately 4.30 am, local time, Israeli forces sighted a drone being launched from a site within Syria. Russian Federation is also propping up the Asad regime which is still fighting Syrian rebels in a war that has killed hundreds of thousands.

According to the statement, the IDF sees the Iranian attack and the Syrian response as a "severe and irregular violation of Israeli sovereignty". Although this is not the first time the Israeli Air Force (IAF) has struck targets in its neighbor's territory, this operation was one of retaliation. The machine, followed by Israeli surveillance since its launch from an "Iranian base" near Palmyra in Syria, was shot down by an Apache helicopter over the Jordan Valley.

Despite the escalation on the northern border, some 100,000 people visited national parks throughout the country on Saturday, including in the north, the Israel Nature and Parks Authority said.

The US administration has backed Israel's hawkish stance on Iran, and declared containing Tehran's influence an objective of its Syria policy. "We consider it necessary to unconditionally respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria and other countries of the region". "Israel identified an Iranian drone which took off from Syrian territory".

Hizbollah and Israel last fought a major conflict in 2006.

Tensions have also spiked across the frontier between Israel and Lebanon over Israeli plans for border wall, and Lebanese plans to exploit an offshore energy block partly located in disputed waters.
