New Joker standalone looks to Joaquin Phoenix as The Joker

Joaquin Phoenix Joker

The proposed origin story will exist in a separate continuity strand to Suicide Squad and other DC Extended Universe films such as Justice League and Wonder Woman in a new series of standalone stories. He's one of Mark Hamill's two most famous, beloved, and long-running characters, he's been played by Oscar victor Jack Nicholson, and Heath Ledger posthumously won an Oscar for playing him.

Sources say Phoenix has agreed to the role but has not yet entered negotiations with studio Warner Bros., who were reportedly eyeing Academy Award victor Leonardo DiCaprio in September.

Insiders stress that Jared Leto, who starred in "Suicide Squad" as the Joker is still on board as the character in the DC universe and that this Phoenix has no effect on what happens with Leto's character in future DC films.

Todd Phillips (The Hangover, War Dogs) is directing and co-writing the script with Scott Silver (8 Mile, The Fighter). And one that looks poised to star Joaquin Phoenix, one of the most enigmatic but fascinating character actors working today. However, WB has not confirmed it as such, and there was once a time when Phoenix was in talks to play Marvel Studios' Doctor Strange, so don't take it as a done deal. The "War Dogs" producer reportedly approached Phoenix about the role before the new year and he has now made a decision to accept.

Joaquin Phoenix and The Joker.

This will be the first film under a new banner that has yet to be named in which WB can expand the canon of DC properties and create unique storylines with different actors playing the iconic characters.

Previously, Leonardo DiCaprio was rumored to circle the project, however it is not too surprising to see that things are shifting to Phoenix's direction. Gus Van Sant's film "He Won't Get Far on Foot", about a man on the road to sobriety after a life-changing accident, was the most recent movie to feature Phoenix.
