Russian Federation has seen record high snowfalls in recent days and visibility was reportedly poor. One of the flight recorders was recovered, Russian news reports said, but it is not immediately clear if it was the data or voice recorder.

A source from Russia's emergency services said that the passengers and crew "had no chance" of survival.

"Tentatively, the plane has crashed near the village of Argunovo". Russia's Investigative Committee will consider all possible causes, RIA Novosti news agency reported.

Russian Federation has suffered numerous plane crashes, with airlines often operating ageing aircraft in unsafe flying conditions.

CNN reports that the aircraft disappeared from radar two minutes after takeoff, at which point dispatchers also lost contact with the pilot. Witnesses reported seeing a falling airplane in flames, Interfax said. There were 65 passengers and six crew members aboard.

The flight-tracking website Flightradar24 says Saratov Airlines flight #6W703 was using a seven-year-old Antonov An-148 aircraft.
