Three people were shot and wounded near the US National Security Agency's headquarters in Maryland, and one person was in custody, local media reported on Wednesday. The NSA said the situation was under control and there was no ongoing security or safety threat.

Larry Whitley, a spokesman for Fort Meade police, said one person was injured in the incident and taken to a hospital.

Police responded to the shooting at the NSA's Fort Meade campus after a black SUV rammed into a barrier.

This is a breaking news story.

US President Donald Trump has been "briefed on the shooting", AP reports, citing White House spokeswoman Lindsay Walters.

NSA officials have said there are no links to terrorism. Shots were fired, according to local media and there are bullet holes in the vehicle, including in the front window.

The incident bears similarities to a 2015 attempted attack by two men who dressed up as women and drove their sports utility auto through the gate.
