Myers, a former Texas beauty queen, has never left the United States, making these accent changes after she fell asleep with a headache especially perplexing. That, too, seemed to fade over the course of a few days, but when a headache sent her to sleep in 2015, the British accent she woke up with had stronger staying power. "I started noticing that when I tried to talk and say something, my tongue felt like it wasn't right", Myers said when she started speaking with an Irish accent in September 2011. "The big thing is to know that she's not faking it", he said of his patient at the time.

Rather than picking up the accent while studying overseas, the mum of seven suffers from a rare medical condition diagnosed as Foreign Accent Syndrome - a condition usually associated with neurological damage.

When Myers speaks, "everybody only sees or hears Mary Poppins", she told ABC news affiliate KNXV.

Myers also has Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, a condition that causes bruising and painful joints - and it turned her accent British.

Despite the diagnosis, Myers just wants her normal voice back.

Two years ago she went down with a crippling headache and woke up with a Cockney accent she's had ever since. The disorder typically occurs after strokes or traumatic brain injuries damage the language centre of a person's brain - to the degree that their native language sounds like it is tinged with a foreign accent, according to the Center for Communication Disorders at the University of Texas at Dallas. Though it's unclear exactly why she developed the speech disorder, her doctors think it's a side effect of a hemiplegic migraine, which produces symptoms that are similar to a stroke, The Post reports.

The rare condition usually accompanies a stroke, neurological damage, or underlying health issue.

Family of Edwin Jackson releases statement, arrangements set
At the time of his most recent arrest , in Indianapolis on Sunday, Orrego-Zavala provided a false name to authorities - Alex G. Manuel Orrego-Savala, who was in the country illegally, was the drunken driver responsible for the death of Edwin Jackson .

Making all these changes consistently - every time they utter a certain vowel, letter, or consonant - is what distinguishes people with the syndrome from someone attempting an accent.

She said it's hard to watch old videos of herself speaking normally.

Myers' chief concern is that she be taken seriously by those in her life.

"Some people think it's physiological; others think it's psychological", she said.

Arizona resident, Michelle Myers, has a condition doctors have identified as Foreign Accent Syndrome. "We just really want to be taken seriously and if it is something that's going to hurt me, help me", declares Myers.

"The person I am now has been through so much, compared to the person here".
