Sher Bahadur Deuba resigns K P Sharma Oli becomes Nepal PM

Nepal elected its first Communist Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and this marks the first tenure of a Prime Minister in the new national constitution.

Oli is the 41st Prime Minister of Nepal.

As widely expected, the CPN (Maoist Centre) led by Pushpa Kamal Dahal "Prachanda", which had extended support to Oli to form the government in the Himalayan country, did not send the ministers in the Cabinet for now.

The main target of the Deuba-led Nepali Government was to complete the three phases of the country's most-awaited landmark elections needed for the implementation of new Nepali Constitution. The issue had strained Indo-Nepal ties. PM Oli took charge along with two other Cabinet members.

He left his school in Class 9th and joined politics.

After registering a grand victory, the communist alliance parties have been in discussions over the announcement of the PM candidate.

Oli started his political career as a student activist in 1966 by joining the fight against autocratic Panchayat System under the direct rule of the King. They also agreed to unify their parties before forming the government.

After his release from prison, he became a central committee member of UML in-charge of the Lumbini Zone until 1990.

"The citizens' trust placed in you for the second time demonstrates the high evaluation of your efforts for their welfare". Reports state that former health minister Girirajmani Pokharel submitted the resignation of all the ministers - 10 union and six ministers of state - from the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist Centre) to Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba.

UML Standing Committee on Wednesday chose to name Oli as the party's prime ministerial candidate after Oli held one-on-one meeting with CPN-MC Chair Dahal in the morning, following which Oli and Dahal briefed their party colleagues about their discussion. He was re-elected to the House of Representatives from Jhapa electorate no 2 in 1999.
