Russian Federation vetoes UK-drafted resolution targeting Iran

UN to Vote Monday on Condemning Iran for Supplying Missiles to Yemen Militias

A group of United Nations experts monitoring the sanctions on Yemen reported to the Security Council in January that it had "identified missile remnants, related military equipment and military unmanned aerial vehicles that are of Iranian origin and were brought into Yemen after the imposition of the targeted arms embargo".

Russian Federation has vetoed a United Nations Security Council resolution based on a UN report condemning Iran for violating an arms embargo by sending weapons to Yemen's Houthi rebels.

Following the failed vote on the British draft, the council adopted a rival Russian draft that did not mention Iran and simply renewed the United Nations sanctions regime on Yemen for a year.

The vote was 11 in favor, Russian Federation and Bolivia opposed, and China and Kazakhstan abstaining. Negotiations were continuing on Sunday.

Russian Federation is set to veto a US -backed bid for the United Nations to take action on Iran for allegedly supplying weapons to terror groups. The UK had proposed to include a provision that would call out Iran for allegedly violating an arms embargo on Yemen, imposed at the onset of its civil war in 2015. The council would express "its intention to take additional measures to address these violations", according to the British-drafted text.

Iran has denied supplying the Houthis weapons.

"Russia has repeatedly stopped the Security Council from acting against the barbaric Assad regime in Syria".

The UN experts, however, said they were unable to identify the supplier.

A resolution needs nine votes in favor and no vetoes by Russia, China, the United States, France or Britain to pass.

"If Russia is going to use its veto to block action against Iran's risky and destabilizing conduct, then the United States and our partners will need to take actions against Iran that the Russians can not block", Haley claimed.

Meanwhile, Iran's envoy to the United Nations says that the U.S. and the UK are trying to distract the global community away from Saudi Arabia's war crimes in Yemen by drafting such resolutions.

Houthis have been controlling much of Yemen's north by force, including the capital Sanaa since 2014.

Tehran, meanwhile, said it "categorically rejects" all the allegations around its supposed arms supplies to Houthi rebels in Yemen, calling the UK-submitted draft an attempt to deflect attention from the "catastrophic humanitarian situation in Yemen", caused by the Saudi-led coalition bombings.

A proxy war is playing out in Yemen between Iran and US ally Saudi Arabia.

Kuwait's U.N. Ambassador Mansour Al-Otaiba is the current council president.

The U.S. has been lobbying for months for Iran to be held accountable at the United Nations for violating an arms embargo on Houthi leaders. The United Nations says that some three thirds of the Yemeni population or 22.2 mln people are in need of assistance.
