The White House was placed on lockdown this afternoon after a man shot himself dead close to the North Lawn.

The incident affected pedestrian and vehicular traffic around the White House, the Secret Service said earlier on Twitter.

While approaching the north White House fence line, he "removed a concealed handgun and fired several rounds, none of which appear at this time to have been directed towards the White House", Secret Service said.

The man was in a large crowd when he fired the gun, the Washington Post reports, citing witnesses.

The Washington, DC, Metropolitan Police Department is taking the lead in the investigation, the Secret Service spokesperson said. Tensions were heightened because Mr. Trump was home at the time.

NBC's White House correspondent Geoff Bennett tweeted first about the incident. They are scheduled to return for a dinner in Washington on Saturday evening. A 35-year-old woman was detained.
