Nashville mayor who admitted affair with bodyguard expected to resign

Mayor Megan Barry announced her resignation at around 10 a.m. this morning, after pleading guilty to theft of property over $10,000 in court today.

Ms. Barry, 54, a former corporate ethics and compliance officer, was known for her outspoken support of abortion rights and same-sex marriage.

She has been sentenced to three years probation and must pay $11,000 in restitution.

Last month, authorities charged in court documents that newly discovered nude cell phone photos may be evidence that Barry and Forrest were having an affair while he was being paid to be her bodyguard. The photos were allegedly taken when the mayor and Forrest were on a trip together. Reports also allege that Barry and Forrest often traveled alone without additional security or staff.

Barry's exit comes after she admitted January 31 to a almost two-year affair with Forrest, who retired that same day.

Barry, a Democrat, is the first Nashville mayor to leave office before the expiration of their term in almost a century. However, Barry does not think she improperly misused taxpayer money, NPR reported.

Starting NFL quarterbacks don't grow on trees, let alone ones as talented as the 29-year-old longtime Washington Redskin . The Redskins used the franchise tag on Cousins twice, giving him $23.94 million for his last season's services.

The resignation means that Vice Mayor David Briley will become acting mayor.

The affidavit also said the TBI has found 260 deleted chats between Forrest's phone and Barry's phone number as well as 35 deleted call logs. During that time, their romantic affiliations allegedly occurred on the clock and therefore, resulted in the theft of property from the Metro Nashville city funds amounted to $10,000 spent in the relationship. Years ago, she and Sgt. Forrest helped me by taking care of a really terrifying stalker issue I had.

For much of her time in office, Forrest, who lead the mayor's police security detail, was a regular presence with Barry during out-of-town city trips.

The affair began sometime in spring 2016, Barry said.

Calls for Barry to resign have been popping up in yard signs around town in recent weeks, amid charges that the mayor's affair reveals poor judgment and possible conflicts of interest. She was the point person for a $5.4 billion transit plan that Nashville voters will consider in a citywide referendum in May.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is looking into the matter and says its investigation "remains active and ongoing".
