SpaceX puts Spanish satellite into orbit

The launch happened at exactly 12:33 a.m. EST (0533 GMT) Tuesday. Now that it's presumably in orbit, the satellite will provide commercial video, data, and broadband service to Hispasat customers as the company expands its coverage to Europe, Africa, and the Americas.

After the world's "most powerful rocket" Falcon Heavy launch, the space agency SpaceX is set to launch the "largest satellite" on its 50th Falcon 9 rocket. This mission marked the 50th flight by SpaceX and launched from Cape Canaveral early this morning.

The Madrid-based company Hispasat will use the newly launched satellite for a variety of purposes. This is also likely to be followed by another Falcon 9 launch in early to mid-April carrying Bangladesh's first communications satellite. At the moment Hispasat operates seven geostationary communications satellites.

But 2017 was a banner year for the company, with a record 18 Falcon 9 launches, and no major launch mishaps.

Powerful Winter Storm Riley continues to whirl over the Atlantic, well south of Nova Scotia and Newfoundland. While this will mainly be a snow event, a mixture of snow, rain, and sleet is possible initially.

Powered by nine Merlin engines, the Falcon 9's first stage has also mastered the art of landing upright on solid ground or on floating platforms in the ocean after launch.

Musk's company reached another milestone with the flight, launching its 50th Falcon 9 from the same launch pad that hosted the maiden flight nearly eight years ago. Plus it's going to a high orbit about 22,000 miles (around 35,700 kilometers) above Earth known as geostationary orbit.

Following ULA's launch last Thursday of the GOES-S weather satellite, the mission was the second in five days from the Eastern Range, and the sixth overall from the Cape this year.

The company said it will not attempt a landing of the Falcon 9 first stage during this launch.
