Walmart to sell meal kits at stores nationwide

Walmart Inc. said Monday that it is launching meal kits at more than 2,000 of its stores this year.

Walmart, based in Bentonville, Arkansas, has continued its battle with Amazon for shoppers.

The move puts the world's largest retailer in direct competition with meal-kit companies such as Blue Apron and HelloFresh, which deliver boxes of raw meat and chopped vegetables to subscribers' doorsteps. The kits and prepared meals cost between $8 and $15 and are aimed at customers who are searching for dinner options that are simple to cook at home, joining a growing list of grocers and startups offering similar options.

Some meal kits are created to be used with rotisserie chickens - like Thai curry chicken and chicken fried rice - and some can be heated up and on the table in less than 15 minutes: pot roast, cheesy ravioli bake and chicken marsala. The options one can choose from including Steak Dijon and Pork Florentine, which would also be available on Walmart's grocery pickup online.

"We've looked at these meal solutions before, but we haven't been happy with the quality that's been in the marketplace", said Tyler Lehr, Walmart senior vice president and general merchandise manager of deli services. Its dishes will include meatloaf, spaghetti and meatballs and chicken fried rice.

Last May, Amazon opened two test locations in Seattle that allow Amazon Prime subscribers to place a grocery order online and then pick it up at a drive-through window. All kits are made and packaged in individual stores daily.

According to CNBC, the step taken by Walmart is just paving how major market shareholders of retail will step into the meal market in the near future, and reach to the customers beyond their store walls. Another, which requires a little more work, is meant to be paired with Walmart's rotisserie chicken.
