CDC Head on Opioid Report: 'This Is a Wake-Up Call'

Significant increases in opioid overdoses were also seen across all five regions in the United States, with the Midwest showing the most dramatic increase (69.7%), followed by the West (40.3%), Northeast (21.3%), Southwest (20.2%) and Southeast (14%).

The researchers found that 142,557 emergency department visits (15.7 per 10,000 visits) were suspected opioid-involved overdoses from July 2016 through September 2017.

The Chicago Tribune reports the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Tuesday released state emergency room data.

That's not to say they're the sole region affected by the opioid epidemic.

Schuchat cautioned the CDC data could be a low-end estimate, as some drug users may avoid going to an emergency department when they overdose. This includes naloxone for first responders, and mental health programs and medication for patients with opioid use disorder.

Support programs that reduce harms which can occur when injecting opioids, including those that offer screening for HIV and hepatitis B and C, in combination with referral to treatment.

The report also suggests emergency departments coordinate with local health departments, state officials, treatment providers and police to identify an action plan to get people into treatment.

The supply of those more risky drugs is increasing faster in some parts of the country than in others, which may help explain the geographic variations, Schuchat says.

"Research shows that people who have had an overdose are more likely to have another".

Rates of opioid overdoses in the ED decreased significantly by 15% in Kentucky.

Schuchat called the report "concerning", but said there are opportunities for hospitals, law enforcement and community groups to create partnerships to address the crisis.

"We think that the idea of initiating medically-assisted treatment in the emergency department is an innovative and exciting strategy", Schuchat said. Opioid overdoses in large central metropolitan areas increased by 54%. "The number of Americans experiencing opioid overdoses is still increasing".

Dr. Stephen Hull, a pain specialist at Mercy Hospital, said that the article is the latest study of many to question whether opioids should be used for chronic pain.
