Cynthia Nixon has not yet decided if she will run in the Democratic primary against Gov. Cuomo

She's apparently forming a campaign staff, including "two former operatives" of New York City mayor Bill de Blasio - Rebecca Katz and Bill Hyers.

Cynthia Nixon, a liberal activist and a star of the hit television series "Sex and the City", is considering a run for governor of NY, challenging incumbent Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic primary, NY1 television said on Tuesday, citing unidentified sources.

Nixon hasn't officially declared her candidacy, and a spokesperson claims a final decision has not yet been made.

"Many concerned New Yorkers have been encouraging Cynthia to run for office, and as she has said previously", Nixon publicist Rebecca Capellan said in a statement.

Asked Wednesday in a conference call with reporters if he thought the mayor, a Democratic rival, was playing a role in Nixon's potential bid, Cuomo remarked: "I think it was probably either the mayor of NY or Vladimir Putin ..."

Mr. Cuomo was first elected governor in 2010 and is running for a third term. "In this business", Mr. Cuomo said with a laugh, "you can't let these things bother you". The paper reported that she once said the Cuomo was "shortchanging the children of NY".

The Emmy Award victor isn't the only actress who could be seeking political office in NY this year.

"There are a lot of people who would like me to run for a variety of reasons", she said then. De Blasio is one of Cynthia's good friends.

Cuomo was asked on a conference call about the possibility of Mayor de Blasio being behind Nixon's potential run. "Otherwise you won't last long". Nixon, a mother of three, has been married to education activist Christine Marinoni since 2012.

Nixon's name recognition and celebrity status could mean she has a real shot at unseating the incumbent.

De Blasio's office didn't immediately comment.

If Nixon were to run and win, she would make history two times over, as the state's first openly bisexual and first female governor. Other candidates in the mix at the time were Syracuse Mayor Stephanie Miner and former State Legislator Terry Gipson.
