UN Nuclear Watchdog: Iran-Accord Failure Would Be 'Great Loss'

Speaking ahead of his one-day visit in Tehran, French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said Sunday that Iran needed to address global concerns over its ballistic missile program or risk new sanctions.

Le Drian said there was "still a lot of work to do" on Iran's missile programme after meeting with top officials, including President Hassan Rouhani and Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif.

A collapse of the Iran nuclear deal would be a "great loss", the United Nations atomic watchdog's chief warned U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday, giving a wide-ranging defence of the accord and his agency's work under it.

Washington put pressure on the European signatories of the agreement to impose some clauses against the Iranian missile program that does not fall within the spirit and letter of the nuclear agreement. Fars news agency said a group of hardliners gathered at Tehran's International Mehrabad Airport and in front of Iran's Foreign Ministry to protest at Le Drian's visit.

The interview came on the same day Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu - in America for the annual AIPAC conference in Washington, DC - was slated to meet with US President Donald Trump to discuss the JCPOA.

Yukiya Amano said that if the deal "were to fail it would be a great loss for nuclear verification and multilateralism".

The prime minister said those problems need to be addressed, though he stressed that that "did not necessarily mean altering the JCPOA, but changing the situation", a reference to his call on world powers to contain Iranian aggression beyond the confines of the deal.

Despite some late West Brom pressure, Watford held on to claim three points that all but confirm their Premier League survival. Following the visit of the Baggies, Watford head to Arsenal and then play Liverpool.

Iran is not allowed to enrich uranium beyond 3.67 percent fissile purity under the deal, a level that is suitable for fuelling some civilian nuclear power stations and far short of the 80-90 percent that is considered weapons grade.

Amano said Iran was implementing its commitments under the deal, which also lifted painful economic sanctions against the Islamic Republic.

Since taking office, Trump has accused Iran of committing "multiple violations" under the JCPOA and threatened to withdraw the United States from the agreement.

In the meantime, the secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council Ali Shamkhani on Monday urged the European countries not to bend under the U.S.

That continued with Iran's armed forces spokesman, Gen. Masoud Jazayeri, who this weekend said over the weekend that Tehran would only give up its missiles when the West abandons nuclear arms.

Le Drian said that both countries had new plans for boosting cooperation in monetary and banking interactions.
