"But he could've. That's why we have an independent counsel".

"It was wrong of me to attack Sarah", Nunberg told the Daily Caller.

It was a reversal from his tone throughout the day, when he lashed out at Trump and his campaign and threatened to defy Mueller in a series of interviews. Nunberg told CNN of the subpoena.

Nunberg started working for then-businessman Trump in 2011, making him one of his earliest political advisers, but he was sacked from the Republican's campaign in August 2015 before the heat of the 2016 presidential race.

Mueller has charged several Trump associates and more than a dozen Russians.

"Let's see what Mr. Mueller does".

But he's not the first to challenge Mueller: Former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort filed a lawsuit in January challenging Mueller's authority to indict him.

In his opening monologue on Tuesday, Sean Hannity reacted to fired Trump aide Sam Nunberg's freakish television interviews, arguing they show just how "despicably low" the mainstream media will go to damage President Trump. President Donald Trump, according to Nunberg, was at turns too dumb for Russian President Vladimir Putin to want to collude with and too idiotic to keep himself out of trouble, yet smart enough not to ask women to "come up to his room", a reference to Putin's alleged offer to send women to Trump's hotel room in 2013. "I wasn't very good after getting fired".

Mr. Nunberg described his TV appearances on Monday as "just me letting loose".

A spokesman for the special counsel's office declined to comment. Nunberg said Wednesday that Brackley, a family friend, is still representing him.

Sam Nunberg did say that he's still "doesn't know" if he will appear in person on Friday, as it has been requested for him to meet with investigators.

A person who refuses to testify or produce documents can be jailed for up to 18 months for civil contempt.

Nine days before his inauguration, and with allegations of Russian collusion swirling, Trump vehemently denied having any business ties to Russia whatsoever.

A witness cooperating with Mueller has told investigators the meeting was set up in advance so that a representative of the Trump transition could meet with an emissary from Moscow to discuss future relations between the countries, according to the people familiar with the matter, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive matters. I'm not going to spend 30 hours going over my emails.

As for his television marathon, he said, "I thought it was a teachable moment, that Americans can understand what this process is like for someone like me".
