UH Fertility Clinic investigating failure involving eggs and embryos

More than two thousand eggs and embryos stored at a fertility clinic in Cleveland, Ohio, may be in danger due to temperature fluctuation.

A noteworthy glitch at an egg solidifying facility in Cleveland may have caused the loss of no less than 2,100 frozen eggs and embryos, influencing in the vicinity of 500 and 600 families.

The problem was discovered Sunday morning and happened some time after staff left the previous afternoon, according to Patti DePompei, president of UH Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital and MacDonald Women's Hospital. "Obviously the situation that occurred here is devastating for the families involved, and it's devastating for. our staff", DePompei tells NBC News.

'But we do know that the temperature that was measured at a portion of the tank was higher than our acceptable limits'.

The tank was plugged into the hospital's emergency power supply and was therefore hooked up to a generator, so it did not lose power, De Pompei said, per the Plain Dealer. "Right now, our patients and families are our first priority".

The fertility center apologized for the mistake and said it plans to investigate how it happened.

Officials, voters prepare for the March Primary Elections
In the handful of special elections since 2016 and in the Virginia and New Jersey 2017 elections, Democratic turnout has been up. That might account for some shifting in party allegiances, Cook said. "We all agree that our opponent is John Culberson".

The hospital is reaching out to each patient individually, both through letter and phone call. These eggs are retrieved from the ovaries and taken to a laboratory where they are cooled to subzero temperatures in a liquid nitrogen tank. Some of these have been stored for decades.

DePompei explained that while the facility has an alarm system, she wouldn't go into further detail until an outside investigation was conducted. The eggs and embryos the had frozen at the clinic may no longer be viable.

People have been sharing personal concerns on the hospital's Facebook post.

The only way to find out if the samples are still viable is to thaw and implant them, the hospital told the the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

According to reports, the hospital said it will not destroy any of the eggs or embryos. All of the tissue has since been transferred to a working tank. That's another dilemma for patients, because once that's done, they can not be refrozen.

On average, freezing eggs can cost between $12,000 and $14,000.
