Mueller seeks Trump business papers; another White House shakeup?

Despite the reporters' ignorance of the "breadth of the subpoena", Schmidt and Haberman assert that the subpoena applies to "all records related to Russian Federation and other topics he is investigating [.]" This is another way of saying they don't know what documents Mueller has subpoenaed.

Robert Mueller, the special counsel investigating possible collusion between Russian Federation and Donald Trump's presidential campaign since May 2017 has subpoenaed the Trump Organization, demanding documents related to Russian Federation, according to the New York Times.

Mueller may be targeting documents related to Trump Organization proposals to build a Trump Tower skyscraper in Moscow in 2015, the reports said.

They mark the first direct requests for documents from the Trump business empire made by the special investigation.

The subpoena is the latest indication that the investigation, which Mr. Trump's lawyers once regularly assured him would be completed by now, will drag on for at least several more months.

Mueller is investigating Russian election meddling and any ties to the Trump campaign. It's hard to believe that Trump's business activities have been completely above board, and Mueller is empowered to pursue "any matters that arose or may arise directly from the investigation". He's charged with investigating not only Russian involvement in the 2016 election but also any other potential matters that arise from that investigation. They say that some of the subpoenaed documents are "related to Russian Federation", but they don't know what documents Mueller has subpoenaed. It will certainly be interesting to see where this leads.

President Trump said that he, too, is taking it very seriously.

Alan Futerfas, a lawyer representing the Trump Organization, said in a statement provided to the publications that since last July, the organization has been "fully cooperative".

Trump eventually signed a non-binding "letter of intent" for the project to go forward and his lawyer, Michael Cohen, told The New York Times that they had discussed the project three times. "I don't make money from Russia", Trump told the Times during the interview a year ago. The journalist later asked Eric Trump what his father was talking about, and according to him, Eric Trump replied, "Well, we don't rely on American banks".

In addition to the company's record production, the White House and the Trump campaign combined have provided more than a million pages of documents to Mueller's investigators. He is also examining whether the president has tried to obstruct the investigation.

Trump's lawyers are in negotiations with Mueller's office about whether and how to allow his investigators to interview the president. But the President is insisting that he wants to as he reportedly believes that he has done nothing wrong.

The White House and the Trump Organisation have yet to comment on the subpoenas.
