"I love NY, and today I'm announcing my candidacy for governor", Nixon tweeted along with a two-minute video officially announcing her run.

"Together we can win this fight", finished the New York-born and raised Nixon, who said she grew up with her mother in what she called "a one-bedroom, fifth-floor walkup". It also made note of the state's role in operating New York City's antiquated and much maligned subway system.

She goes on to say that New York's leaders are letting down the city's residents, pointing out problems with healthcare and the NY subway line.

"We are now the most unequal state in the entire country", Nixon says in the ad, "with both incredible wealth and extreme poverty".

Nixon's looming candidacy has unnerved some supporters of Cuomo.

Nixon's announcement came towards the end of Democratic Governor Andrew Cuomo's second term in office. She noted that for the past 17 years, she's been "fighting for better schools, better health care, and LGBTQ equality".

Nixon has already faced criticism for that decision, with Harvard professor Alan Dershowitz accusing her of collaborating "with Israel haters" and calling on NY voters not to support her "bigotry".

Nixon enters a Democratic field that also includes Cuomo and former state senator Terry Gipson, of Rhinebeck, N.Y.

Nixon has publicly voiced her opposing views on Cuomo's education policies in an interview on "The View" last April and in an op-ed where she compared him to President Donald Trump's Secretary of Education, Betsy Devos.

Nixon is forming a team of alumni of the New York political sphere, including Rebecca Katz and Bill Hyers - who worked on New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio's first campaign - to help her ahead of the primary, NY1 reported earlier this month. I swear on every pair of Carrie's Manolo's this is not fake news.

A Monday Siena College poll found that 66% of the state's Democrats would vote for the governor, while just 19% would support Nixon. "How did we let this happen?" she said on the video. She described herself as a "proud public school graduate - and a prouder public school parent".

"I've never lived anywhere else", Nixon says in the video.

Cuomo in January reported having $30.5 million in his campaign account. "We are sick of politicians who care more about power than they do about us".
