US stocks ended slightly lower on Wednesday, with major indexes giving up gains in choppy trade after the Federal Reserve raised USA interest rates, while a strong gain in the energy space helped limit losses.

Market participants are also watching for signs from the USA central bank, which is expected to take a more aggressive path toward normalising monetary policy, as the Federal Reserve's two-day monetary policy meet concludes today.

While markets are sure about the quarter-point hike, they are less confident of what the Fed signals next: three hikes this year as previously forecast by policy makers or four.

Wall Street declined on Monday as a plunge in Facebook pressured the technology sector amid reports that the social media company's user information was misused.

The Nasdaq Composite slid 2.09 percent to 7,325.58 points and the S&P technology index dropped 2.5 percent, both set for their worst one-day percentage fall since a sell-off in early February. Emerging market stocks lost 0.10 percent.

US stocks sank about 2 percent on Monday, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average shedding almost 400 points, as Facebook led a selloff in technology stocks on reports that the social media company's user information was misused.

"The economic situation post-tax cuts also justifies a significant shift upwards in the dot plot", he added, referring to fears the Fed's de facto policy forecast chart will signal four rate rises rather than three because of the effects of United States tax reforms.

"But if we see retaliation, and significant trade disruptions, it's a different order or magnitude, could begin to affect global growth forecasts".

A pan-European equity index fell nearly 0.3%, its early weakness accelerating after the WSJ report on China and a tech shares index reversing an early bounce.

Fears of a trade war have also weighed on commodity prices, though tensions in the Middle East supported oil prices on Wednesday.

Stocks were choppy following the Fed announcement, as yields on the 10-year U.S. Treasury note US10YT=RR moved closer to 3 percent, touching a one month high of 2.936 percent.

Concerns about rising U.S. Treasury bond issuance as the government faces a widening fiscal deficit after last year's U.S. tax cuts has seen yields rise this year.

Crude oil hit a six-week high after a surprise decline in US inventories, strong compliance on OPEC production cuts, and persistent concern related to the Iran nuclear deal.

As a result shares in soybean exporter Archer-Daniels (ADM.N) fell 1 percent and Bunge (BG.N) dropped 0.7 percent.

Amazon.com climbed 2.69 percent, topping Google-parent Alphabet Inc.in market value, and becoming the second most valuable company in the U.S.
