In a statement in the German parliament Chancellor Angela Merkel said that what is happening in Syria, where thousands of civilians are persecuted, killed or forced to flee, is unacceptable.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Tuesday she was pleased that the European Union and Britain had agreed on a Brexit transition deal but added that there were still many challenges to overcome in negotiating Britain's departure from the bloc. President Donald Trump came under fire in the US for congratulating Putin for his re-election this week, without raising issues such as USA election meddling or the poisoning.

He also assured Putin of "Nigeria's commitment to a stronger and mutually beneficial relation with the Russian Federation under your watch".

"Just now we are seeing horrific things with the bombing for example in Eastern Ghouta", Merkel said.

However, Barak claims he delayed the operation so that the Israel Air Force could mount the best possible orchestrated attack. The International Atomic Energy Agency said in the past that the site was "very likely" to have been a nuclear reactor.

Following lengthy coalition negotiations after the federal elections last September, Chancellor Merkel was formally re-elected to her position for the fourth time by the Bundestag last week. But she added: "Of course, it's also the case that this was an exceptional humanitarian situation".

Merkel added that "never again must United Nations aid programs be as dramatically underfunded as two years ago", noting that Germany has increased its funding. All Germans need to benefit from the longest economic boom since 1990, she said.

The AfD, as the main opposition party, had the first response to the chancellor's speech, with its co-leader Alexander Gauland saying: "Society is falling apart".
