IOA says Sports Minister has assured clearance of 'extra officials'

"The Commonwealth Games are more than just a warm up [for the Europeans]", she said.

The royal visit comes in the build-up to the 2018 Commonwealth Games on Australia's Gold Coast, which opens on April 4.

The official also said that this does not mean that government is cutting down support to the athletes as the ministry has sanctioned 10 extra coaches for different disciplines as requested by the concerned federations. There is a 33 percent quota and beyond that if there is a requirement, such officials can travel and the expenses will be borne by the respective NSFs. He said the cost for extra staff was being borne by federations and, therefore, the government shouldn't have pruned the list.

As expected, the slugfest between the Indian Olympic Association and the sports ministry has started and the reason is the all-familiar issue of the size of the Indian contingent.

This assurance comes after the IOA President Narinder Batra slammed the ministry for raising "unnecessary issues" about the Commonwealth Games contingent, asking it to apply the same standards of probity for its own bureaucrats. These days in every sport you don't need only the coaches but you need managers, doctors, physios and masseurs.

The winners will attend the Athletes' welcome function, and then fly back together with the New Zealand team and attend official functions on their return.

EU, Britain reach Brexit transition deal ahead of EU summit
Asked whether Britain had sold out, the spokesman said it was a negotiation that involved "give and take on both sides". The idea was also deemed "unacceptable" by the pro-British party in Northern Ireland that props up her government.

Batra said that it is the ministry who should shoulder the responsibility if an athlete underperfoms in such a scenario. "So, the media should also question this practice", said the IOA chief who was elected in December previous year.

"IOA is an autonomous body under the International Olympic Committee and Indian athletes take part only through the IOA. So where is the problem?", questioned Batra, adding Hockey India will be taking care of the expenses of six officials accompanying the men and women teams. For the present CWG, we have 222 Athletes participating, hence the permitted officials with the contingent will be 74.

"It is always an honour to represent Australia but to be nominated as a team captain is a bonus and one I'm very pleased to accept", said Pearson after the decision by Athletics Australia.

Batra, along with Secretary General Rajeev Mehta distributed the official kits to the members of the Indian contingent.

The Indian contingent has an amalgamation of youth with the likes of Manu Bhaker, Mehuli Ghosh, Anish Bhanwala and Anjum Moudgil.
