Hyde-Smith, the state's agriculture commissioner, thanked Bryant and said: "I pledge to you to serve all of our citizens with dignity, honor and respect". Rolda Darlington writes that Cochran's resignation throws up a host of new challenges for the Republican Party, which is already on the back foot in the lead up to the 2018 midterm elections.

Hyde-Smith also noted her involvement in what was also one of Cochran's many priorities: the establishment and maintenance of the U.S. Department of Agriculture's catfish inspection office. The officials suggested her candidacy, rather than McDaniel's, could cause a reprise of last year's special Senate election in Alabama, which saw Democrat Doug Jones upset Republican nominee Roy Moore.

The governor of MS appointed state Agriculture Commissioner Cindy Hyde-Smith on Wednesday to succeed fellow Republican Thad Cochran in the U.S. Senate. "Her service as the Co-chairman of the Agriculture Policy Advisory Council for President Donald Trump has been instrumental in ensuring MS farmers and ranchers a voice during key decision making". Cochran is in his second stint as chairman of the powerful Appropriations Committee.

Chris McDaniel (R) has announced that he will run in the special election, putting him up against Hyde-Smith.

While McDaniel's decision to shift over to the race for Cochran's seat likely means smooth sailing through November for Roger Wicker, it guarantees that we'll see a raucous primary battle in the Magnolia State between Hyde-Smith and McDaniel and perhaps other candidates should anyone else decide to enter the race.

She noted that for the past 17 years, she's been "fighting for better schools, better health care, and LGBTQ equality". Nixon enters a Democratic field that also includes Cuomo and former state senator Terry Gipson, of Rhinebeck, N.Y.

McDaniel's campaign released an open letter to Trump on Wednesday morning from an assortment of Republican officials, encouraging the president to avoid an endorsement of Hyde-Smith. There's also a potentially viable Democrat in the race.

"By the very nature of the special election, it poses a problem for the GOP", Dowling said. MS remained one of the last gaps for Democrats in that pledge.

And Mr. McDaniel, who has a history of making incendiary comments, would be more at risk of losing than a less-controversial Republican.

"The history of this moment is not lost on me, Governor", Hyde-Smith said. She voted like a Democrat. Earlier this year, he announced he would challenge Sen. This trend does not portend well for the Republican Party in light of Cochran's retirement plans, and to be sure, the uncertainty for the GOP's ambitions to retain the Senate do not end there.

"Cindy has always been a people person, has always wanted to help and do for everybody", Lowe, 67, said Wednesday in Brookhaven. In fact, a Democrat hasn't won one of its two Senate seats since 1982. Her research interests include minority and gender politics, Congressional studies, American institutions, civic education and participation, and Democratic Representation. Both Mississippi Senate seats will be up for grabs this year - GOP Sen.
