Mahmood, who returned to India on Thursday night, a week after he was called to Islamabad for consultations amid the raging row between two countries over alleged harassment of diplomats, asserted that his country desired "peaceful and good-neighbourly" relations with India.

President Xi Jinping in his message to President of Pakistan Mamnoon Hussain said: "on the occasion of the 79th Pakistan Day, on behalf of the government and people of China and also in my name, I would like to express my warm congratulations and best wishes to you and through you to the government and people of Pakistan".

He also underlined the Kashmir issue at the "Pakistan Day" joint military parade in Islamabad.

"Pakistan stands for peace in the region and beyond and gave a message of peace to those who did not want it", he said cautioning India that it would be highly unsafe to misconstrue Pakistan's desire for peace.

He said Pakistan' foreign policy was centered around endeavours for permanent peace in the world and based upon non-interference in to internal issues of other countries. We must give them a future of hope and opportunities.

Mahmood was called back to Islamabad for consultations after alleged incidents of harassment of its diplomatic staff in New Delhi, with the Pakistan Foreign Office spokesperson claiming the Indian government failed to take notice of the increasing incidents of intimidation of Pakistani diplomats, their families and staff by its intelligence agencies.

Talking about anti-terrorism operations in Pakistan, Hussain lauded the armed forces as well as the nation for eliminating terrorism from the country under operations Raddul Fasad and Zarb-i-Azb and announced a medal "Tamga-i-Azam" for those who rendered sacrifices for restoration of peace.

"This was a courtesy visit as Pakistan is a neighbour and India maintains normal diplomatic relation", a sourcein the ruling BJP said here. It was important to resolve all the outstanding issues including the J&K dispute peacefully through dialogue. He said that "India held the key to peace in South Asia and that country could not progress without cooperation".
