Alton Sterling shooting: No criminal charges for police officers

Sterling's family and activists urged Landry to pick up the case and file state charges against the officers since federal authorities declined to prosecute them. I know the Sterling family is hurting.

Sterling, a 37-year-old black man, was shot to death July 5, 2016, as two white officers pinned him to the pavement outside a Louisiana convenience store where he had been selling CDs.The officers were responding to the report of a man with a gun. His cause of death was deemed a homicide caused by gunshot wounds to his heart, lung, esophagus and liver. Relatives and their lawyers angrily denounced the decision.

Attorneys L. Chris Stewart and Brandon DeCuir, who represent Alton Sterling's five children, said Landry met Tuesday morning with Sterling's relatives and their lawyers in Baton Rouge.

Racial tensions were still simmering in Louisiana's capital when Gavin Long, a 29-year-old black military veteran from Kansas City, Missouri, ambushed police officers near a vehicle wash on July 17, 2016. "It was an unfortunate situation but it was a justified shooting", John McLindon, an attorney for Salamoni, told The AP.

Since 2005, 85 non-federal law enforcement officers - a group that includes police officers, state troopers and deputy sheriffs - have been arrested for murder or manslaughter after fatally shooting someone while on-duty, according to Philip Stinson, a criminologist at Bowling Green State University in OH, who studies arrests of officers and has kept data since that year. The Minneapolis officer charged last week is one of a dozen with his case still pending.

Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry said on Tuesday that following an investigation the state could not proceed with a prosecution of police officers Blane Salamoni and Howie Lake.

Baton Rouge's police department was also accused of allowing racism within the department, as officers referred to black people as "animals" and "heathens". Lake shocked Sterling with a stun gun before the officers wrestled him to the ground, according to federal investigators.

Tuesday's news has also prompted outrage and many have taken to Twitter to express their feelings on the lack of charges for the involved officers.

The killing was captured on cellphone video and circulated widely online, sparking demonstrations across Baton Rouge.

The announcement was made in Baton Rouge, coming hours after Landry broke the news to Sterling's family. The caller said the man pulled out a gun.

Upon review of the evidence, Landry said Salamoni and Lake reacted understandably considering the circumstances the officers were under at the time of the shooting. Then shots rang out.

Study finds "no racial bias" in USA police shootings. The next day Philando Castile was shot and killed in Minnesota by police officer and the aftermath was streamed on Facebook by his girlfriend. Until this is done, many young black men and women will be forced to fear any non-threatening action they take could be met with certain death.
