Waymo's buying up to 20,000 Jaguar I-PACE SUVs and outfitting them with its self-driving tech

Waymo, the company that grew of out of Google's self-driving auto project, announced a deal to buy up to 20,000 electric cars over the next two years, a move that shows the scope of its ambition when it comes to driverless ride-hailing services.

"That Waymo want to offer one million rides a day shows they're definitely going after Uber", commented Mr Stevens.

Currently, Waymo has Chrysler Pacifica minivans and prototype autonomous Lexus RX SUVs, but the RXs are being phased out and replaced with minivans. It's understood the Waymo Jaguar I-Pace will begin road-tests later this year.

"Honda makes a lot of products, in a lot of different product categories", Krafcik said, without elaborating further.

During the event, Waymo CEO John Krafcik took the wraps off the company's latest self-driving vehicle - the all-electric Jaguar I-PACE - a small SUV that is being pushed as a competitor to the Tesla Model X. The SUV is the first battery-powered vehicle for the brand, which is owned by India's Tata Motors Ltd, underscoring the convergence of electrification and automation.

Samsung Galaxy S9, Galaxy S9+ 128GB Storage Variant Launched In India
This report comes on the heels of the rumors saying that Samsung will commercialize its in-display fingerprint reader this year. Interested buyers can click on the "Notify Me" button on the Samsung's website to know whenever the handset is available.

The incident is under investigation by the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board and Tempe police, and Arizona Governor Doug Ducey suspended Uber's permission to test autonomous vehicles in the state at all.

Waymo's Krafcik, however, asserted that his company has already run 5 million miles of testing on public highways and simulated another 5 billion miles in virtual reality. The self-driving products of the future will be designed around passengers, not drivers.

Rather than outfitting a vehicle for self-driving technology, Waymo engineers collaborated with Jaguar's team throughout the I-Pace's development process. It's a painfully practical testbed, but not one that will help the general public get excited about self-driving cars.

A Waymo statement said: "This is a sleek and graceful vehicle, so it will provide a safe and delightful experience for our passengers".

Earlier this year, the two companies finally settled a trade dispute in which Waymo accused the former head of Uber's autonomous program of stealing proprietary data from Waymo. "That's the world we're building".
