President Donald Trump stepped up his tough talk on immigration on Tuesday, saying he wants to deploy US military forces to stop illegal immigrants at the border with Mexico until a long-promised wall is completed and "proper security" is in place.

Mr Trump said he has discussed the military deployment with Defence Secretary Jim Mattis.

President Donald Trump said Tuesday that the US military will be used to guard the US-Mexico border.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders declined to say how Trump would re-direct the funding, which likely would require additional congressional approval.

Mr Trump begrudgingly signed a spending bill last month that provided far less money for the wall than he wanted.

"If it reaches our border our laws are so weak and so pathetic.it's like we have no border", Trump said on Tuesday.

Trump announced past year that he was ending the program that protects young "Dreamer" immigrants, but the Department of Homeland Security is continuing to issue renewals because of a court order. The White House did not immediately answer questions about Trump's tweets. The President is now publicly discussing deploying U.S. troops on American soil to push his white supremacist agenda.

Trump appeared to take credit Tuesday for halting a caravan of about 1,100 migrants, many from Honduras, who had been marching along roadsides and train tracks in the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca.

Mexico routinely stops and deports undocumented Central Americans, sometimes in numbers that rival those of the United States. He lamented what he called "horrible" USA laws that left the southern border poorly protected. Two caravans traveled north previous year and others have made similar trips since 2010.

The conversation covered issues ranging from construction of a border wall to the "caravan" of people making their way to the US from Central America - an annual publicity effort to call attention to the plight of Central American migrants that has drawn furious tweets from Trump in recent days.

Trump threatened to retaliate by revoking the U.S. -Mexico free-trade pact NAFTA.

In a statement Monday, Mexico's government described the caravan as "a public demonstration that seeks to draw attention to the migratory phenomenon and the importance of respecting the rights of Central American migrants".

An analysis by KXAN local news in 2016 found that most border arrests by state troopers were for drunk-driving and minor drug violations, not the smuggling of people or drugs.

Mexican authorities responded to Trump's Sunday threat to kill NAFTA by pledging to disband the caravan and allow some transmitters to apply for asylum in Mexico. Republicans insisted that Obama "secure the border" before they would vote to overhaul the immigration system.

The move is not entirely unprecedented - former presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama previously deployed thousands of National Guard troops to the southern border during periods with an increase in border crossings.
