Prince Philip admitted to hospital for planned surgery

The Duke of Edinburgh has been admitted to King Edward VII's Hospital in Marylebone, central London, for the surgery.

Prince Philip is recovering after a successful hip replacement operation, Buckingham Palace says.

The Duke of Edinburgh had held that position until his retirement past year.

Philip was also due to attend the annual Maundy Service last Thursday at St. George's Chapel Chapel with Queen Elizabeth but cancelled at the last minute due to a problem with his hip. The surgery was conducted under general anesthetic and the palace later said he was progressing satisfactorily but would remain in the hospital for approximately two weeks.

Some media reports in the United Kingdom indicated that the timing of Prince Philip's hip replacement surgery was in preparation for the activities that will be involved in the royal wedding ceremony.

Philip, 96, is understood to have had trouble with the hip for about a month and will have an operation on Wednesday to resolve the problem.

"What is most important is someone's fitness, as in their heart and lung fitness, how much exercise they do and how well nourished they are". At times blunt to the point of rudeness, Philip is Elizabeth's most important support.

"The Duke of Edinburgh was admitted to King Edward VII Hospital in London last night, as a precautionary measure, for treatment of an infection arising from a pre-existing condition", a Buckingham Palace spokesman said at the time.

Prince Philip has been a constant and often mischievous presence at royal functions for decades and is well-known for punctuating royal pomp with a taste for off-colour jokes. He accompanied the queen on visits overseas as late as 2015.

But it was not until July 1947 that their engagement was announced and they tied the knot that year on November 20 at Westminster Abbey in London.

The British crown's power in Australia is largely symbolic, and while the Queen remains hugely popular, the monarchy is viewed by some as an anachronistic colonial relic.
