Former South Korean President Park Geun-hye was sentenced to 24 years in prison on Friday just over a year after she was expelled from office due to a scandal that drew millions of demonstrators on to the country's streets.

The Seoul Central District Court found the former leader guilty of 16 counts of bribery, abuse of power, and coercion.

The former president's prison sentence is four years longer than that of Choi Soon Sil, who was sentenced with 20 years in prison.

Park was also found guilty of abusing her power by blacklisting artists and cultural figures critical of her administration and exercising undue influence in the appointment of civil servants. Park has maintained her innocence, saying she's a victim of "political revenge". She didn't attend Friday's verdict, citing a sickness that wasn't specified publicly.

Once seen as the darling of South Korean conservatives, Park earned the nickname "Queen of Elections" for her record leading her party to victory in tight races, culminating in her own election as president in 2012.

The corruption scandal triggered months of mass protests and political turmoil in South Korea.

Older, conservative South Koreans, who remembered the dictatorship of Park's father fondly as a period of strength for the country, were her electoral base and a common sight throughout the impeachment process.

The presidential Blue House said in a statement after the verdict: "Each person must have different feelings about former President Park Geun-Hye".

She was charged and arrested soon after her dismissal from office.

Her predecessor, Lee Myung-bak, is also being investigated for corruption.

Three months later, the eight-member Constitutional Court then voted unanimously to remove her from office.
